Pay What You Can Community Class
with Amy Duncan
Saturdays 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Jewel Yoga is committed to making Iyengar Yoga accessible and free to all who need it.
“I flunked aerobics three times. “ That is what Amy Duncan tells people when they ask her how she got started in yoga. Amy did not consider herself athletic but thought she should “get fit”. She tried aerobics but her body did not like it. She then began attending yoga classes with Julie Lawrence at her studio (now Jewel Yoga). Though it took her awhile to develop a mind-body connection, she has been practicing ever since, often studying with visiting senior instructors.
Amy attended Julie Lawrence’s Teacher Training program, apprenticed with Julie, and began teaching yoga asana classes in 2002. Wanting to be a better teacher, she went through the Iyengar assessment process, receiving her certification in 2012.
Amy believes in using the Iyengar method to bring yoga asana to every body. She uses various props – blankets, straps, blocks, chairs – to help students maintain their alignment in a pose.
For fifteen years, Amy taught beginning and intermediate students at Sunset Yoga Center, in addition to teaching Gentle Yoga for students with Multiple Sclerosis, often adapting poses for each student. She currently teaches yoga at Portland State University, offering Gentle Yoga, All Levels Yoga and Relaxation Yoga. A particular favorite class was when she taught yoga to the PSU’s Men’s Basketball team for several years. Amy is honored to bring free yoga to the Portland community.
